Unclogging blocked silos

Using highly specialist equipment, BUCHEN-ICS’ experts unclogged soybean silos in no time at all

One of the world’s largest food companies processes soybeans into staple products at its plant in the south of the Netherlands. These beans are stored in silos – each of which can hold around 2,700m³ – before they are transferred to the production plant. One of these silos had become clogged up around five years ago and the company had been unable to use it despite its best efforts to clean it. In its search for a solution, the company met up with BUCHEN-ICS’ Dutch team last year.

Expertise meets high tech

While assessing the situation, BUCHEN-ICS’ experts discovered that the silo in question had become completely clogged up – primarily because the contents had been stored in it for such a long time. Three further soybean silos were also in a critical state, although they were not yet completely blocked. The Dutch specialists decided to call on their colleagues from the UK and set up an international task force to come up with a solution to this problem. The concept they drew up focused on BUCHEN-ICS’ highly specialised technology.

The team used the company’s BinDrill® system to drill through the compacted mass of soybeans from the top of the silo. This work created spaces within the blockage and also loosened the clogged-up soybeans. The operatives also deployed the powerful Cardox® system. By rapidly releasing liquid carbon dioxide, this technology is able to break up the compacted material into small particles within seconds.

BinDrill® – our bridge breaking system

This system can easily drill through blockages. Thanks to its industrial hydraulic high-torque motors and various drill bits, it is able to drill through even the hardest of material.

Fast results thanks to cutting-edge technology

These two systems are an integral part of BUCHEN-ICS’ silo cleaning equipment. Both can be operated without the employees having to enter the silo and so are a safe and efficient alternative to manual work. Just as was the case in this particular project. BUCHEN-ICS unblocked and cleaned the silo that had become completely clogged up within two weeks and needed just a short time to clean the other three silos. The customer was more than happy with the results. Since then, BUCHEN-ICS has cleaned a further 35 silos for this customer in the Netherlands as part of maintenance projects as well as a first soybean silo in Germany.

“Cleaning silos is part of our everyday business. This particular assignment was a first, though. Our client was really pleased with the speed of our work and our non-man-entry technology – so much so that new projects soon followed.”
